C40 Cities has launched an exciting new tool to bridge the gap between urban design and public health. The Healthy Neighbourhood Explorer empowers both residents and city planners to assess how well their neighbourhoods support healthy living.  Cities for Better Health have supported this work since its inception in 2017, and will continue to support, leverage and synergize with c40 cities network in the future

Introducing the Healthy Neighbourhood Explorer: How does your city measure up?

Built on the concept of the 15-minute city, this tool underscores the importance of access to essential services and a wide range of amenities within easy walking or biking distance. By evaluating factors such as traffic safety, air quality and access to green spaces, the Explorer highlights the profound impact of urban planning on health outcomes.

Developed in collaboration with Chaire-ETI, Inetum and Cities for Better Health, the Healthy Neighbourhood Explorer features a Healthy Neighbourhood Index score that allows users to compare different areas based on key indicators, such as mobility and land use.

"From Bogotá to Vancouver, Melbourne to Paris, cities are demonstrating the transformative potential of urban planning," says C40 Cities executive director Mark Watts. "The Healthy Neighbourhood Explorer tool is a significant step forward in empowering cities to create neighbourhoods where residents can thrive."

The Explorer empowers cities to identify and remove barriers preventing residents from leading healthy lives—especially in vulnerable communities without access to healthy food and spaces for physical activity. This innovative tool is a game-changer for urban planners and residents alike, providing insights into how neighbourhood design impacts both individual and community health.
