In 2020 Berlin Marzahn-Hellersdorf became the first German city to
join the Cities Changing Diabetes partner network. More discussions
have since taken place with cities across the country about the
potential to join. Progress has been encouraging with the city of
Mainz, home to around 280,000 people, and I am pleased to report an
initial study has now been completed.
The study focused on inner-city differences in diabetes prevalence
and care and was led by a top scientist in the field of health
economics, Prof. Dr. Günter Neubauer and his team. The data was
evaluated in cooperation with the largest German health insurance
companies operating in Mainz.
The results from Mainz
are now in and provide the optimal starting point for planning the
first interventions with the health department so that the target
groups can be successfully reached. We look forward to more news from
Germany in due course!
