On 10 November, Mississauga, Canada, became the newest member of our global network! The partnership was made official during a council meeting in which Mississauga made Cities Changing Diabetes history by having Mayor Bonnie Crombie sign the Urban Diabetes Declaration along with every member of the City Council.
The signing, which was initiated with a unanimous council vote back in June, was followed by a virtual reception hosted and broadcast from City Hall. Community leaders and academic partners, industry representatives, local business associations, elected officials attended, including Novo Nordisk Canada President Beatrice Clerc.
Speakers included the key leaders who will work to achieve better health outcomes in Mississauga, including Dianne Fierheller from the Family and Child Health Initiative at the Institute for Better Health (IBH), Trillium Health Partners (THP), Angela Carter, Executive Director of Roots Community Services, and Gurpreet Malhotra, CEO of Indus Community Services.
The reception also featured greetings from community leaders in other Cities Changing Diabetes network cities, including Houston, Philadelphia and Copenhagen.
With a determination to achieve health equity driven by community consultation and primary research, Mississauga is off to a strong start.
