During the past month, partners of Cities for Better Health in Lisbon undertook a large screening campaign in the city. The campaign, which was carried out at food distribution centres linked to the Covid 19 Emergency Food Support Program of the Municipality of Lisbon, will continue until the end of 2020.

Screening for diabetes at food banks in Lisbon

The campaign includes both diabetes awareness (educational leaflets) and screening elements. The screening, which was conducted using the FINDRISC (Finish Diabetes Risk Score) risk assessment, included the consensual collection of personal data (identification, contact details, socio-demographic and health data) that will be processed strictly to the extent necessary. Once screened, and depending on the outcome of the assessment, participants are offered the opportunity to enrol to receive educational and motivational text messages, an HbA1c test, or an appointment at the local in APDP (specialized Diabetes healthcare centre) health centre.

The intervention, which is a collaboration between Cities for Better Health Lisboa and the Covid 19 Emergency Food Support Program of the Municipality of Lisbon, strives to reach residents in the city who do not currently have access to ongoing projects aimed at promoting healthy behaviours and reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.
