A Bite of HOPE is a culinary programme to create healthier communities run by Cities for Better Health partner Hope Clinic in Houston. When COVID-19 hit, Bite of HOPE’s dedication to the underserved in Houston became more important than ever.

Serving up a Bite of HOPE through COVID-19

Joseph Brozovich, Culinary Program Coordinator & Lead Instructor, explains Bite of HOPE’s pandemic response in his blog, which you can read here. Joseph says he felt a responsibility to help Houston’s minorities and immigrant restauranteurs during closures and shutdowns. “I saw an opportunity to help by guiding them to adapt menus with more cost-effective yet healthier options. We started a pilot programme with eight Latina-women-owned food businesses.”

The intervention was instrumental in restaurants keeping their doors open. The programme helped restaurants adopt creative strategies and incorporate healthy dishes without incurring extra expenses.

Bite of HOPE is now working with its third cohort of restaurants and already has a waiting list for more participants. The blog is an inspirational example of how people can lend their expertise in an impactful way whilst promoting good public health – well worth a few minutes read: Serving Up a Bite of HOPE Through COVID-19
